Purely Collaged Postcards

Hi everyone,

Sorry for my late post. These are the glorious postcard backgrounds I received from Bex.

Both already pretty fabulous and I was so worried I would ruin them. This is what I did before posting one on to Virginia and one to Sam... That yellow fish was what caught my attention most. Then I found a vintage advert on an old newspaper page I had. It read something along the lines of "if fish could read they'd buy this bait"(I don't think they would somehow...) but it tickled me so that's what I went with.
Next up, that brown square looked like a window to me and the woman looked a bit scared. Found a vintage dinosaur comic strip in my box o' bits and it pretty much made itself . The wording all came from a fabulous "Wonderland of Knowledge" encyclopaedia that my partner's Mum gave me... he had told her to charity it! Flipping cheek. It's a treasure trove of gorgeous colour plates and interesting articles.

If you'd like to see the postcards I received - I've blogged them here. Irene and Jazz I couldn't get your blog links from the sidebar to work but if you can let me know them I'll make sure you are linked in my post.

I really enjoyed this challenge, it pushed me out of my comfort zone and I now have huuuuuge respect for purely collage artists. I will play more with collage now I think... but also mixed with paint and ink.

Thanks for reading :)

Hi there and Purely Collaged postcards

Hi I'm Jasmine.

Although I've been a member on here for a while, I've never managed to fathom out how to post an introduction or update other than to leave a message and even then not as successfully as i would like, so here goes.....

I've always dabbled on the artistic side and trampled my way through all different types of crafting and art, and although I love the beautiful nature of the chaotic and freestyle and would like be able to produce anything half as good as everyone here, I haven't yet managed to find the freedom myself, so my work ends up just teetering on the safe side, but I am trying and apparently that counts too..

Recently I've been doing the purely collaged postcard challenge swap, halloween coasters, circle journals and altered sardine tins, which I've added a taste of below.
Irene's before
After - sent to Rebecca
Irene's before

After - sent to Carmen .

I hope I can keep up with all your gorgeous work, and thanks for having me.

Purely Collaged Postcards

Mine are a little late in wending their way across the Channel but they have finally gone today. Hopefully they will make it to their new homes fairly unscathed!

Firstly, here are the fabby backgrounds I got from Jaz. Sorry about the wonky scan but it's the best one I have.

And here is what I did with them.

I really enjoyed doing this, even if it was a really struggle not to add just a little ink or paint!

Purely collaged postcards

Sorry If the recipients have not received these yet, but I had to post today as I knew I wouldn't have time the rest of the week. I am hoping that people got them today as they were posted on Thursday.

Here are the beautiful backgrounds I received from Carmen

I especially love the fungi on this one!

And the braille paper on this one.

And here is what I did to them

I found this hard, it took me so far out of my comfort zone I didn't think I'd get back again! I don't use a lot of collage and have never done purely collage before. I so wanted to just give it a spritz with a bit of spray ink or doodle something with a paint pen, they just didn't feel finished to me! I also didn't know if I was 'doing it right' but having now seen everyone else's I have a much idea of what it's all about and don't feel I was too far off the mark!

Sonja Collage PostCards

I received these two backgrounds from Nigel which were great to work with. I ended up with two different pathways one whimsical and the other a bit bleaker. I have to confess to have a total senior moment and not taking any photos of the completed pages. I'm hoping Lou and Jez come to my rescue with pictures. I also managed to forget to sign them as well so I'm hoping my blips are over. The first one I used Grazia magazine predominately and I loved the end result. It's a bit whimsical and quirky and the head reminded me of Evil Edna from the a children's show in the 80s. I also used a Hey Girl line as I have loved some of these on Pinterest. In fact once I started I enjoyed the process of cutting and fiddling around with images. I really ended up going with the flow and letting the images guide the process.
The second card made me think of Banksy and Big Brother at first and I went looking in my National Geographic collection and ended up with some images of poppies being farmed from Afganistan. I attached the image of the farmers hand to the figure and thought it looked surreal and just right. It definitely has a different feel from the first card.
I'm hoping this makes more sense when Lou and Jez add the completed pictures. I enjoyed this challenge a lot and have loved seeing some of the other cards. They have been really inspiring.

Here is the card that Jez received:

Flo's collaged postcards

I've now heard word from both Vicki and Nigel that their postcards have arrived, so here they are blogged before I forget :)

These were the backgrounds I received from Jean:

and

And this was what they looked like once I had done my bit:

and

I didn't realise until after that second one was finished that I had inadvertently left the word "crap" by the umbrella lady's face - oops! :D

Like a lot of you I found this project a real challenge!  The hardest bit for me was not being able to use a pen or pencil to add a bit of a drop shadow to my people, or to grab an ink pad to ink the edges of the card a tad....

It was fun though :)

COLLAGED POSTCARDS - LOUISE'S BACKGROUNDS AND FINISHED CARDS

Beautiful colours on Louise's backgrounds.  Having seen the cards posted so far, these are rather tame - still I did enjoy the challenge of trying to fit something appropriate into those striking shapes.

Here are the bases Irene received from Pat:

postcards

So here are the two postcards I received with just their backgrounds and these are now the finished product.

They are now on their travels to their new owners.

jean xx

These are the postcards as they arrived with Jean, having now completed my postcards that I received I think I know what I would have done different with these two bases - but everything in hindsight!  Thankfully Jean was able to work with the same

PURELY COLLAGE POSTCARDS

Good afternoon (evening or morning depending on when you read this).

This challenge definitely worked outside my normal comfort zone, I mean cutting up magazines is a norm, but no paint!!!! I mean NO PAINT!!!! After I'd got over that factor I battled with the bases and sent those onto Jean (which I haven't blogged as I'm assuming she will in due course) not quite sure I had done what I was supposed to but they were sent.  However, I wasn't the only one feeling a little out of their comfort zone as the post-it note from Sam who sent the bases to me proved!  However, she really shouldn't have worried - fabulous bases to work with!

These are the two as received from Sam, lovely and bright with fabulous perspective on this one!

And loving the sparkly sky on this one!

And here are they are finished (after fighting with them) this is the one sent to Jean

And this one to Sarah, who indicated that she liked the discworld look of it, partly intentional when I cut out the turtle but struggled to find four mini elephants for its back, so decided on fish in the sky instead!

I liked the leaf on this one, I found it already with the London skyline cut out of it.  I almost added a car, but it seemed a step too far - so left it as is and Sarah said she liked it which made me very happy because like I said I struggled with this challenge!

Hi everyone

I think it's time for us to at least start thinking about a new collaboration, don't you?

I know we are all crazy busy in the run up to Christmas, so this one doesn't require you to actually do anything until January, but I thought I'd get the sign ups up and running now

This is going to be a bit of a stretch for those of us who love our inks and paints and rubber stamps ......  a PURE collage challenge!

by Robert Farkas
All you are allowed to use are found imagery and text - from magazines, books, postcards, junk mail etc. (Commercial patterned papers eg scrapbook papers are ok too) - plus scissors/craft knife and glue or gel medium to stick stuff down or make image transfers.  Oh and a bit of cardboard to stick the whole thing on.

That's it.

Are you up for the challenge?

This is a great exercise to help us focus on composition, and on our neat cutting-out skills :)

by Hailey Gaiser
Sign ups are below - there is no limit on the number of people taking part.  Feel free to put yourself on the list more than once if you would like to make and receive extra cards.

Once sign ups are complete I will close the loop so that everyone is posting in a circle, with the last person to sign up posting back to the first person on the list.

by Alexandre Coll
Then each of us will make TWO partly collaged postcards, around 7" x 5" in size.  Just the backgrounds at this stage.

These are to be posted to the next person on the list on or before Monday January 14th 2013

The recipient finishes the collaged postcards (so, this is a two-stage collaboration), and sends one (naked, no envelope, as mail art) to the person immediately after them in the list, and the other to the next person along.

The deadline for this second posting date is January 31st 2013

by Laura Redburn
I know that's a bit complicated, let me illustrate with an example - so if we have 4 sign ups:

1. Andy
2. Barry
3. Charlie
and 4. Danny

Then Andy will make two postcard bases and collage the backgrounds, and send both of these in an envelope to Barry by Jan 14th.

Barry will complete both the postcards and send one (no envelope) to Charlie, and the other (no envelope) to Danny, both by Jan 31st.

by Heather Gabel
Meanwhile, Charlie will be finishing off Barry's cards and sending them to Danny and Andy; Danny will post the cards he finished off to Andy and Barry, and so on.

I hope that makes sense :D

The upshot is that everyone will make two first stages and two finished postcards, and will also receive two fab pieces of collaged mail art in the post to keep.
